In the 1920s, overweight consumers were marketed “reducing soap,” the ads for which promised to eliminate fat on any part of the body that was washed with this miracle soap. From the 1920s through the 1950s, some people would partake of the tapeworm diet, which didn’t require much change in diet, other than consuming a tapeworm.

Another diet trend has caught traction which promises to help the dieter lose a pound a day, or even more. The hCG diet, and it was developed by a doctor who believed that HCG hormone found in a pregnant woman’s body could help overweight men and women lose weight — and keep that weight off after returning to a normal routine.

Of course, eating well-proportioned meals is much easier when you’re injecting stimulants and hunger-suppressing hormones. If you gain weight again, the doctor or clinic — upon the follow-up visit — may recommend you buy HCG and start the treatment over again. Therefore, you may just scrap real attempts to change eating habits and sign on to long-term use of chemicals without fixing the real problem: your diet and exercise habits.

Contrary to the belief of many who start this diet, this form of dieting is neither healthy nor successful in achieving weight loss as it provokes a slow down of the body’s metabolic rate – after the initial period the body stores more energy in the form of fat. While some weight may be lost, this weight is usually gained back very quickly in the weeks that follow this diet. On the other hand, the weight can stay off if one exercises and maintains a proper diet afterwards, and watches his/her calorie intake after stopping the diet
