Education Secretary Armin Luistro leads the Deped community in renaming Rizal II Building into Teodora Alonso Building in grateful tribute to the mother of national hero, Gat Jose Rizal. The event coincided with the 100th death anniversary of the hero’s mother commemorated today, August 16, 2011.

Even in her old age, she had the welfare of her countrymen in mind. When she was offered a lifetime pension by the Philippine Legislature in recognition of her family’s sacrifice for the country, she politely declined the offer saying that if the government has enough money, it would be better if people’s taxes are reduced. The building named in her honor is right at the back of Rizal I Building, DepEd’s main building.
