To the children with rare disease and their families, Fly for Rare is also a rare treat—a worry?free day for them Rare diseases in the Philippines Children born with rare diseases or disorders may appear normal at birth but eventually develop severe medical problems in life.
These medical conditions become long?standing, progressively disabling, life threatening, requiring multidisciplinary care. In the Philippines, these medical conditions are considered rare if it affects 1 in 20,000 or less. Individuals with rare genetic disorders are “orphaned” by society. They suffer from social abandonment due to lack of understanding of their disorders and lack of a support system. Medical help is elusive under the current conditions of the country’s health program due to prohibitive cost of treatment and/or scarcity of available medications and health care facilities in the country. Some of them need to forget that they are sick and taking expensive medications like Rebif
Since the early 1990’s, a group of dedicated medical professionals from the Institute of Human Genetics of the University of the Philippines?National Institutes of Health then led by Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla have been providing the medical diagnosis, disease management, and access to health facilities and systems of PGH, Department of Pediatrics. As the number of patients increased, these dedicated doctors along with parents and advocates, formalized and incorporated a non?stock, non?profit organization in 2006 known as the Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Inc. (PSOD).
PSOD commissions itself to be the central network for the advocacy and coordination of all viable efforts to sustain a better quality of life for individuals with orphan or rare disorders in the Philippines. Why fly for rare? As more people are diagnosed and coupled with the prohibitive and increasing cost of treatment and therapies, PSOD is now tasked to accelerate efforts to increase awareness and generate resources in order to sustain consistent and timely access to critical medical treatments and therapies as well as to address the emergency medical needs of our patients.
Fly for Rare is one of PSOD’s efforts to raise awareness and at the same time help generate funds for critical care and emergency funds of kids with rare disorders. This really would not be possible without the help of Genzyme Corporation, Mead Johnson Nutrition,Malunggai Life Oil by Manila Natures Link, For details about this advocacy please log on to http://psod.org.ph
