Top health and fitness trends in 2015

Are Filipinos going to be healthier in 2015? If last year’s health and fitness trends—detox juices, packaged healthy meals, among others—are any indication, then the answer is a resounding “YES!”

“Health and fitness trends will continue to be big this year. As we are bombarded by public awareness campaigns on healthy living, we also work out harder, eat cleaner and get screened for various illnesses. Many programs will also emerge to support our health and fitness goals,” says Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines, a leading HMO provider in the country. Continue reading »

The Angels Walk for Autism

I  WAS there. Yes, together with an estimated 12,000 people, I walked with my son Joshwa and other “angels” on a Sunday morning (January 25, 2015), around the premises of the SM Mall of Asia. Virtually, we walked around the Philippines, together with members of Autism Society Philippines provincial chapters, proclaiming to the world our love and support for persons affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Was there something different in this year’s Angels Walk? For the past 8 years that the ASP has been organizing this nationwide activity, I have observed that the level of advocacy has developed, from year to year, along with the growing needs of the community of persons with ASD

From a humble group of a hundred concerned parents that gathered in front of the Cultural Center of the Philippines on the first year of Angels’ Walk, the advocacy today not only includes a call for awareness and acceptance of children with ASD and the provision of basic services but also for a much deeper and concrete meaning of the word acceptance — that of an “autism inclusive Philippines.”

The highlight of the Angels Walk 2015 was ASP also unveiled it’s A-OK Philippines campaign – a multi-sectoral movement which is aimed at building an autism-inclusive society. ASP National President Mona Magno-Veluz said the movement aims to inspire more autism-friendly establishments, compassionate workplaces, job transition specialists and coaches, freelancers on the spectrum and livelihood opportunities for persons with autism.

Also present during the event were SM Prime Holdings President Hans T. Sy, ASP Immediate Past President Ms. Jan Pena,  Diwa Representative Emmeline Aglipay-Villar, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos Jr., National Council on Disability Affairs Director Carmen Zubiaga, Governor Paul Daza and wife Gigi, and many others.

The SM Cares Program on Disability Affairs and the Autism Society Philippines have gathered over 12,000 people at the 9th Angels Walk held at the Mall of Asia Arena last January 25, 2015.  The event kicks off the Autism Awareness Month, which aims not only on raising awareness, acceptance and appreciation of autism, but also advocating for a disability-inclusive society

\What we want is for the Philippines to be autism-OK,” said Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP) president Mona Veluz during the annual Angels Walk for Autism at the SM Mall of Asia on Sunday.

An autism-OK Philippines, she explained, is one that adequately accommodates the needs of persons with autism, a developmental disability characterized by impairments in interaction and communications.

An estimated 600,000 Filipinos are diagnosed with autism. The Sunday gathering, where thousands wore wings, aimed to raise awareness of autism and how people with the disability can enjoy inclusion in society. The event marked the celebration of the Autism Awareness Month.

“Autism Inclusive Philippines: Aim High! Fly High!” was the theme of the 2015 Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week. The Autism Society Philippines continues to inspire awareness, acceptance and inclusion of persons with autism (PWAs) in society and to promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling PWAs to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently and contribute productively.
